How to convert a PDF to Excel

  1. 1. Open the PDF

Drop a PDF that has tables in it, or select Try a sample statement to see how it works first. Your browser reads the text of each page and finds the rows that line up in columns. Nothing is uploaded.

  2. 2. Check the columns

Each table is shown as it looks in the PDF, with purple lines where the columns split and the Excel rows underneath. Drag a line to move it, use Add line to split a column, or Remove line to join two. If several tables share a layout, Use these columns for all similar tables copies your fix to them.

  3. 3. Download Excel or CSV

Choose one sheet per table or one sheet per page, then select Download Excel (.xlsx). Download this table as CSV saves only the table you are looking at. Check the totals against the PDF before you rely on them.

Bank statements to Excel

Dates, descriptions and the paid out, paid in and balance columns become rows you can sort, filter and add up. A description that wraps onto a second line is joined back into its row. When a statement runs over several pages with the same columns, the pages become one table and the header row repeated at the top of each page is dropped. The summary says how many were removed.

Two things stay as text so nothing is guessed: amounts marked DR or CR, such as 1,234.56 CR, and dates printed without a year, such as 03 Sep. Fix those in Excel with a helper column or Find and Replace. Only pages that follow each other are joined. If a page in between has no table, the parts stay separate, and the Join with the table on the next page box lets you split or rejoin them yourself.

Other PDFs that work well

Invoices and receipts

Line items with quantity, unit price and amount come out as rows. The invoice number, address and notes around the table are not part of it; copy those with PDF to text.

Payroll and timesheets

Employee numbers keep their leading zeros, so 00125 stays 00125, and pay amounts and hours written as decimals become numbers.

Financial and annual reports

Figures in brackets become negative numbers and percentages become percentage cells. A page of text set in two columns can occasionally look like a table; untick Include in Excel file for it.

Price lists and catalogues

Prices keep their currency sign as the cell’s number format, so they still add up. Codes with letters or leading zeros stay as text, but a code made only of digits, such as 100234, becomes a number unless you untick Turn amounts into numbers.

How numbers and dates are converted

With Turn amounts into numbers and Turn dates into Excel dates on, cells become real numbers and dates. The number style (such as 1,234.56 or 1.234,56) and the date order are detected from your PDF; change them in the options if a value in the preview looks wrong. Anything unclear stays as text.

What Excel gets from common PDF values
In the PDFIn Excel
1,234.56The number 1234.56
(4.99)The number -4.99, shown in brackets
12.00-The number -12
$1,234.50The number 1234.5, shown with its $ sign
12.5%The number 0.125, shown as 12.5%
03/09/2026The date 3 September 2026 (day first) or 9 March 2026 (month first)
3 Sep 2026The date 3 September 2026
00125Text, so the zeros stay
1,234.56 CRText
03 SepText, because there is no year

Dates are shown as year-month-day; pick another display in Excel with Format Cells. Reference numbers of 12 digits or more stay text so Excel does not round them. Untick Turn amounts into numbers to keep amounts exactly as printed.

Scanned PDFs and photos of tables

A scan is a picture of paper, so there is no text to put in cells. Run OCR PDF first. It is also free and also runs on your device. Then open the searchable copy it saves here. OCR can misread a digit, so compare amounts with the original. Straighten a tilted scan with Deskew PDF before OCR. For a photo of a table, make it a PDF with JPG to PDF first. If only some pages are scans, those pages are skipped and named in a note.

What it does not do

It copies values, not the look: fonts, colours, borders, images and charts are not carried over. Text that spans two columns, such as a merged heading, goes to the column where each word sits. Columns with no visible gap between them are hard to split, so set the column lines by hand. Text printed at an angle, such as rotated column headings, is not read. Each run reads up to 150 MB and 500 pages (300 on devices that report little memory); enter a page range for longer files. A PDF that needs a password to open must be unlocked first. One that only restricts printing or copying opens as it is.

Why the PDF is not uploaded

The PDF is opened by pdf.js inside this page, the tables are found by code running on your device, and the Excel file is written in your browser. No file, file name or cell value is sent to Feemag or anyone else, and the site’s usage statistics never include them. That matters for statements, payslips and invoices with account numbers on them. Close the tab and the data is gone. Read how file privacy works, or compare with the iLovePDF and Smallpdf alternatives pages.

After the download

Stack several months of statements into one table with Merge spreadsheets, then trim spaces and empty rows with Clean spreadsheet. If you saved a CSV, CSV to Excel turns it into a workbook later, and Excel to PDF turns the cleaned sheet back into a PDF to share. Developers who want each line with its position can use PDF to JSON. More in PDF tools and spreadsheet tools.

Questions & answers

Can I convert a bank statement PDF to Excel?

Yes, if the statement PDF contains text, which most downloaded statements do. Dates, descriptions, amounts and balances become rows, wrapped descriptions are joined back into one row, and a statement that runs over several pages becomes one table without the repeated headers. Amounts marked DR or CR and dates without a year stay as text, so check those columns.

Is it safe to use with bank statements and payslips?

The PDF never leaves your device. It is read and converted by your browser, nothing is uploaded or stored, there is no account, and usage statistics never include the file, its name or its contents. Closing the tab clears it.

Can I convert a scanned PDF to Excel?

Not directly, because a scan is a picture with no text. Run OCR PDF on it first, which is also free and also on your device, then open the searchable copy here. OCR can misread digits, so compare the amounts with the original.

Why are some columns split or merged wrongly, and how do I fix them?

Columns are found from the gaps and ruled lines between values, so a narrow gap or a long description can move a split. Drag the purple line to the right place, use Add line to split a column or Remove line to join two, and the rows update as you go. On a phone, drag the line with your finger. Ctrl+Z or Cmd+Z undoes the last change.

What happens to tables that continue onto the next page?

When a table carries on to the next page with the same columns, the pages are joined into one table and its repeated header row is dropped. Untick Join with the table on the next page to keep them apart. Pages are only joined when they follow each other.

How are negative amounts handled?

(12.00), 12.00- and -12.00 all become the number -12. Amounts in brackets keep their brackets on screen in Excel. Amounts marked DR or CR stay as text, because the tool cannot tell which sign your bank means.

Why are some dates or numbers still text?

Anything unclear stays as text rather than being guessed: values with leading zeros such as 00125, reference numbers of 12 digits or more, dates without a year and amounts with DR or CR. If the date order could not be detected, check one date in the preview and change Date order.

Can I get a CSV or open it in Google Sheets?

Yes. Download this table as CSV saves the table you are looking at as a UTF-8 CSV that Google Sheets, Numbers and LibreOffice open. The .xlsx file also opens in Google Sheets: upload it to Drive or use File, Import.

Does it keep the formatting, such as fonts, colours and merged cells?

No. It copies the values into plain cells. Header rows are bold and the first one is frozen, but fonts, colours, borders, merged cells, images and charts from the PDF are not carried over.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

If the PDF needs a password to open, unlock it first with Unlock PDF and open the unlocked copy here. A PDF that only restricts printing or copying opens without a password.

Is there a page or size limit?

Each run reads up to 150 MB and 500 pages, or 300 pages on devices that report little memory. For a longer PDF, enter a page range and convert it in parts. There is no daily limit.

How is this different from iLovePDF or Smallpdf?

Those services upload your PDF to their servers and limit their free plans. Here the PDF stays in your browser, there is no account or daily limit, and you can check and fix the columns before you download. Smallpdf’s pricing page lists OCR when converting to Excel as a Pro feature; here OCR PDF is free, as a separate first step. The iLovePDF alternative and Smallpdf alternative pages compare them in more detail, with sources.

Is it really free?

Yes. Every Feemag tool is free, with no sign-up, no watermarks added by us and no daily limits.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Your files are processed by your own browser on your device and never uploaded to a server. Processing speed depends on your device and file size.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes: in any modern browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox) on iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows and Linux.
