How to compare two Excel or CSV files

  1. 1. Choose the original and revised files

Open two Excel or CSV files and select one worksheet from each. The first row must contain unique, non-empty column headings. Your data stays in your browser.

  2. 2. Choose how to match records

Select a shared unique ID column, such as a product code, to match records even when rows move. Use Row position only when the rows remain in the same order. Blank and duplicate IDs are rejected.

  3. 3. Review and download the changes

Select Compare spreadsheets to see added, removed, changed and unchanged row counts. Download the Excel report for the full list of differences with before and after values.

Comparing inventory lists and data exports

Use a stable identifier to compare two versions of a product list, contact export or other table. Columns match by exact heading, so reordered columns are supported. Case and spaces matter; text 1 and numeric 1 compare equal.

What the comparison includes

The report lists cell-value differences and added or removed columns. It does not compare formatting or formula expressions, and it uses saved formula results without recalculating them. Empty rows are skipped. Limits are 20 MB per file, 20,000 data rows and 200 columns per sheet, and 100,000 report entries.

Prepare your sheets

Use Clean data to tidy spaces or duplicates before comparison, or Spreadsheet converter to change formats. Keep your original files for reference.

Questions & answers

Can I compare rows that changed order?

Yes. Select a shared unique ID column. Blank or duplicate keys are rejected so records are not matched ambiguously.

Does this compare formulas and formatting?

No. It compares text representations of cell values, including saved formula results. It does not recalculate formulas or compare styling. Numeric 1 and text 1 compare equal; case and spaces matter.

Can I compare different worksheets?

Yes. Choose one worksheet from each file. Columns match by exact heading, even when reordered. Blank rows are skipped, so row positions refer to imported data rows.

What does the report contain?

An Excel file with change type, record key or data row, column name, old value and new value. Added and removed columns are listed too.

Is it really free?

Yes. Every Feemag tool is free, with no sign-up, no watermarks added by us and no daily limits.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Your files are processed by your own browser on your device and never uploaded to a server. Processing speed depends on your device and file size.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes: in any modern browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox) on iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows and Linux.
